Jack's Story: Why BloomBuild Exists

BloomBuild started with one tile and one price tag that made no sense. This is the story in my own words, because if you are about to spend real money renovating, you deserve to know exactly how this business works and why it exists.

The moment it clicked

I came back to Australia after living overseas for a few years, and my mates, at 24, had basically given up on ever owning a house. Everyone blames land prices. But once I started running my own building projects, the thing that actually shocked me was materials.

I stood on a factory floor and held a tile that costs around $14 a square metre to make. I had seen that same style of tile wearing a $70 ticket in Australian showrooms. Not a better tile. The same porcelain, the same slip rating, out of the same kilns. On its way to you it passes through an exporter, an importer, a distributor and a showroom, and every one of them clips the ticket. By the end, the tile costs several times what it should.

Nobody in that chain is evil. They all have rent and reps and warehouses to pay for. But none of them make the tile better, and you pay for all of it.

So I went to the source

I got on a plane and went to the factories myself. Not once. I have lost count of the trips. I walked the production lines, checked tiles with my own hands, and built direct relationships with the people who actually make them. That is what the photo at the top of this page is: me and our factory partners going through samples at the source, the same way we still do it today.

That is the whole trick. There is no secret technology here. You just skip the queue of middlemen, do the quality control yourself at the source, and pass the difference on. We inspect before anything ships, and when you order, the tiles come straight to your door. No minimum order either. One box or one house, same price per square metre.

The BloomBuild model, in one box

Factory price plus a flat margin of around 20%. That is it. No showroom lease, no commissioned reps, no distributor in the middle.

The cost breakdown is on every product page. You can see what the tile costs and what we make. We would rather show you the maths than ask you to trust a sale sticker.

Sea freight, kept cheap. Tiles are heavy, so we ship by sea and plan ahead instead of paying panic prices. Typically three to four weeks from order to arrival.

Delivered kerbside, Australia-wide. Straight from the source to your driveway.

It is also why we almost never discount. The price is not inflated to leave room for one.

Why it matters

Because the numbers are not small. Our Litchfield White Terrazzo Look is $36 a square metre. The showroom equivalent sits around $70. On a 40 m² floor that is $1,360 back in your pocket, on one room, on one trade. Run that across a whole renovation and it is the difference between finishing your house and finishing half of it. We broke the whole chain down dollar by dollar in why showroom tiles cost 40 to 70% more.

Everyday Aussies renovating a bathroom should not be funding four layers of middlemen. That is the entire reason BloomBuild exists.

Do not take my word for it

The Today Show had me on the couch to explain how the model works, and news.com.au covered the mission to shake up what Australians pay to build. The questions they asked are the same ones you probably have, so I put the segment up in full.
